I’ve officially decided that there should be an orientation to becoming old.
After practicing medicine for 25 years, I’ve found that many people who reach their 60’s are usually not at all prepared for the challenges of aging.
The Baby Boomers and Gen Xers that are now entering their 50’s and 60’s have struggled with aging, and I’ve decided that an orientation to aging is necessary.
People are now getting to 55 years old . . .
And Wham!
They show up in my office thinking they are dying . . .
But, in reality, they’re just getting old.
Yet, if I tell them they’re old, they’ll just get offended.
No one warned them . . .
And, many of them complain to me about their aging symptoms . . .
Yet many of these symptoms can be dramatically slowed down or reversed . . .
Had there been an orientation in your 50s, you could have entered your 60s and 70s much more prepared . . .
” Why am I getting hot flashes? How do I stop them?
” Why does my complete use of sentences while texting reveal my age?
” Why can’t I get rid of this belly fat? How do I fix the sagging belly?
” Just because you are a 57 year old man does not mean you should have “man boobs.”
” Why are these wrinkles occurring now? How do I prevent them?
” Why am I losing hair on top of my head and growing it where hair never grew before?
” How do I take the car keys from my aging parents?
” Should I get a TicTok account to lurk and follow my grandchildren?
” When do I need a cane or walker? And, how do I prevent that from happening?
” Everyone in my family has heart disease. How do I prevent it?
” Why did I suddenly start leaking urine when I cough?
You and I need a Healthy-Life and Longevity Orientation.
We had kindergarten, which transitioned us kids from home to grade school.
We had an 8th-grade orientation. This helped us transition from grade school into high school.
And, you likely got a freshman orientation when you entered college. This helps prepare you for expectations in college life.
You probably had a job orientation when you entered a new job.
But nobody has explained to you what to expect after age 50.
