I have ten dogs . . .
Yes, I know. That’s a lot of dogs.
A friend came over the other day and he was horrified by the fact that all ten dogs each wanted a whiff of his bottom.
To answer your questions that will inevitably arise, there’s a whole lot of butt sniffing going on around my property.
I know, butt sniffing is an odd, comical routine persisted in by our furry friends, yet there significant meaning to this activity.
It is the canine way of saying “hello,” and asking how your day has been.
To be clear, there is a tremendous amount of information gained in this behavior. Dogs gain as much information from their sense of smell as humans do with their eyes.
Your dog’s sense of smell is about 100,000 time stronger that yours.
Human noses contain about 5 million olfactory receptors (the cells that detect and send smell inputs to the brain) compared to dogs impressive 150 million olfactory receptors.
Unique chemical clues are given to your dog when he or she takes a whiff of a backside.
” Individual Identity: The anal area emits a distinct scent profile from to apocrine glands, sweat, and bacteria, acting like a chemical fingerprint. Dogs can identify who you are or distinguish you from others based on this unique odor.
” Health and Diet: Your scent can reveal aspects of your health or what you’ve eaten. Changes in body chemistry, like those from diet, hormones, or illness, alter the smell, which dogs can detect.
” Emotional State: Dogs can pick up on stress, fear, or excitement through pheromones and chemical changes in your body odor. Your emotional state subtly influences the scent you emit.
” Social and Environmental Cues: The smell can indicate where you’ve been, what you’ve interacted with (e.g., other animals, foods), or even your hygiene habits, giving the dog context about your recent activities.
Because dog lack the verbal communication humans do, their sense of smell compensates for this. Dogs sniff each other’s rear ends to exchange information. While it might seem awkward to humans, for dogs, it’s a natural and efficient way to “read” you.
How is your sense of smell?
No, I don’t recommend you go around sniffing your neighbor’s butts.
However, if your allergies are making your sense of smell problematic, I recommend V-Organex, a combination of natural herbs that acts to decongest and stop that allergic nasal drip.

Too funny, we have two miniature Schnauzers. Abby is 12 this month, we lost her sister Maggie in January and immediately brought home a new baby, Gracie, and Gracie is all about sniffing Abby’s backside…oh well, they play together and sleep together, what more can you ask. And Abby isn’t so lonesome anymore.
