Boredom? I Don’t Have Time For It!

Lura Zerick

We often hear kids say, “I’m bored!” Sometimes we even hear older people speak of boredom. They sit around all day, doing little but waiting for something exciting to happen. We reply that “boredom is a lack of imagination.” If nothing is happening, then make it happen!

I must be a little strange; I am not bored; I have too many things that I want to do. Even if I don’t do them successfully, I want to try. If I don’t try, I won’t know whether I could. My mind is always open to new ideas; I enjoy doing things that are a little different from the usual. In my mind, an idea is no good unless I follow through with it.

What if Alexander Graham Bell had ignored the idea of a telephone? (Gosh, how young was I when I learned that name?) Can you even imagine our days now without a telephone? I can remember when we would start talking about summer vacation in January. WHY? One of the reasons was because it would take us away from all the daily phone calls! Now we see old and young walking around with a cell phone growing out their ear. Is this what they do all day? This is NOT for me!

I appreciate having a phone when I need one but I’m not giving my day to a phone! I have other things to do. Yesterday I had an idea that I wish I had 20 years ago. Ten years ago I was very busy with speaking dates and book signings. At age 81 it is too late for me to put this idea in motion but I am passing it on to a creative daughter; maybe she can use it. It is worth a try.

Not all ideas involve business; it might be a new subject to write about or it could be a new ingredient to try in a favorite soup. I like a challenge so I am open to ideas that will help me accomplish something. I enjoy the sense of achievement which is several miles from the failure I thought I was in the past! It is a different world I live in now, compared to then…and MUCH more wonderful!

Years ago I cried constantly, believing the crap that my then-husband told me about my being stupid and ugly. I FORGOT that I had enjoyed learning new things. I never wanted to be anything but a terrific wife and mother. I was so wrapped up in making others happy that I forgot about myself. NOW, I am happy with the things I accomplish, knowing that I, like each of you, have many God-given abilities that I can apply to any ideas I have. I am busy and happy, and definitely not bored.

You make me feel motivated, everytime I read something by you.
    Thank you.

    • I am glad! I know that feeling! Every time I read Mother Earth News, I want to hurry to the yard and start digging – for any reason! Hope you are doing well.

  2. Delicious cover!

    • Thanks; it makes me smile too. I just learned of a book I will order and THAT title ( l  WAS MARRIED TO A SHORT GUY ONCE) made me smile too! I anticipate several chuckles, maybe even a belly laugh!
